How to clean a baby safely

Updated: Jan 12

Hi, everyone hope your well! Today I have decided to post about cleaning a dirty baby bunny/piggy. Recently I had a mom bunny who decided to wee on her babies, this can be for 1 of 3 reasons...

  1. She's disowned them (rare)

  2. She's claiming them

  3. She's accidentally done it a bit too close to her nest

So, although I'm talking about baby bunnies in the nest this method is best for any baby bunny/piggy as well as adults! Adult piggys love a bath in a very shallow filled sink!

This is what my bunny babys looked like when I took them out to be weighed...

Poor things were soaked, stained, and very smelly!

So what did I do?

Get some fragrance free, sensitive wet wipes and rub them down to until the wet wipes are staying their original colour.

Then rub gently with a bath or hand towel while blowing with your mouth, on adult bunnies you can try a hair dryer on a low setting but stop immediately if your bunny is frightened! DO NOT USE A HAIR DRYER ON BABY BUNNYS/BABY PIGGYS YOU WILL SHOCK THEM! Adult and baby bunnys/ piggys MUST be fully dry before going outside. Babys in a nest need to be as dry as you can get them but due to the nest of fur they shouldn't get as cold.

If a pet has something stuck in the fur that won't come out using a wet wipe, cut it out with scissors. In the unfortunate event (usually white pets) that you cant get the stain out with a wet wipe, shave the fur and allow it to grow back. If this is a baby wait until they are 4 weeks old and then shave/cut them. DONT SHAVE/CUT THEM COMPLETELY BALD THEY WILL FREEZE TO DEATH! Always just shave/cut the top layer of fur/hair and wait for it to grow then repeat if needed. Please don't dunk your bunnys/piggys in water it can kill your pet no matter the age (adult piggys are the exception if they like water)!

Piggys have an oil gland at the base of their spine, this can often make the hair sticky and glue like! A shallow wash in small animal shampoo is the best in this case.

Hope this helps! Any questions or comments please feel free to post! Thanks for reading 🐰🐷
