Mini Lion lops and breeding.

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

So mini lion lops, OMG they are sooooo cute I just love them. They come in 2 forms... single mane lion lop, double mane lion lop.

History... so the mini lion lop origins from a mini lop being bred to a lion head. Although some people thought they would try it with a mini lop and an angora.

So how do you breed to get full maned litters you say? Well... firstly a mini lop and a single mane mini lion lop look the same at birth. But a double mane Mini Lion Lop looks like a gremlin! Literally! This is the nickname they have been given. See the photos below as examples...

So in these photos you can see the longer fur on the back and ears, the sides are still skin. The longer fur starts from the shoulders and goes in a point at the base of the tail. This is a cream double mane Mini Lion Lop, about 5- 8 days old.

These photos are of a cream, single mane, mini lion lop about 5- 8 days old. Notice how the fur is the same length all over.

So what's the difference when they reach adult hood? Well... a single mane loses any longer fur from the base of their tail and also looses most of the fur around the head. They end up with thin wisps of long silky fur around the ears and head. The double mane mini lion lop on the other hand has fuzzy fluffy fur around the head and base of the tail that stays for life. Some double manes can end up with sleek fur on the bodies but others are literally balls of fuzzy fluff!!! Check out the examples below...

This is Smudge, she is a double mane Mini Lion Lop with a sleeker body.

This is a baby currently for sale, he is a double mane Mini Lion Lop with a fluffy fuzzy body.

This is Buggs she's a single mane Mini Lion Lop. Her long fur is only around the head and it a longer sleeker fur.

Breeding for a specific mane size...

OK so here's how it works... M=Mane m=No Mane in the genetic code. So to get a single mane rabbit it must be passed a M from one parent and an m from the other parent. For double mane babies must be passed the M from both parents.

Let's make this easy to understand...

I want to breed double mane babies only... I Must breed 2 Double Mane adults.

I want to breed a mixture of double mane and single mane babies... I must breed a Double Mane adult to a Single Mane adult.

So what happens if I breed 2 Single Mane adults together? Well... if the M is passed on from both parent the baby has a double mane. If one parent passed M and the other passes m you will have a single mane baby. So what if both parents pass m? The baby has no mane and due to the genetic make up of the mini lop these no maned babies are actually classed as a Mini Lop! Therefore you would get Mini Lops, Single Mane Mini Lion Lops and Double Mane Mini Lion Lops from this litter! How cool is that!?!

Photo example...

This is daddy, he's a Lilac Single Mane Mini Lion Lop.
