What Bunny to Buy?

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

Want a Bunny but don't know what to buy? Here's something to help your decision...

Breed... I find French Lops, Mini Lops and Mini Lion Lops to be the best for families as they are calm and friendly bunnies. So I'm basing all my information on here on those breeds.

The images below are examples of the breeds, Henry is a mini lop, Cloud is a Single Mane Mini Lion Lop, Simba is a Double Mane Mini Lion Lop and Elodie is a French Lop these are what they look like as adults.

The images below are examples of the breeds as baby's, frosty is a full mini lop, Clover is a Single Mane Mini Lion Lop, Charlie is a Double Mane Mini Lion Lop and Demi is a French Lop.

That's on looks but what about the other aspects...

Just want 1... It's not advised to just have 1 bun as they are very sociable animals. However, if you are only having 1 bunny and you can give it lots of time here are things to consider... boy rabbits will sometimes need neutering as they may start doing what male rabbits do best to cushions, teddies or even you legs and arms. Or in my sisters case your children's hair! Girl rabbits are territorial and so may become very protective over their area of the house or their hutch/cage.

Wanting more than 1 bunny... You can have as many bunnies of the same gender as you like in the same area as long as they have enough space. If there's not enough space they will fight no matter the gender. If you have converted a shed and have a run attached I would advise a max of 5 small bunnies/2-3 french lops dependingon run size. If you have a 5ft double tier hutch I would advise a max of 2 small bunnies. If you have a 6ft double tier hutch I would advise a max of 4 small bunnies or 2 french. Remember bunnies that live in hutches will need a

good size run they can use daily. Indoor with their own room I would say think of it as a shed space depending on the room size.

Do you get boys, girls or a mix? When having large groups of bunnies I would advise 1 male and everyone else female (Get him Neutered! But remember you may still need to get the girls spayed to avoid territorial and phantom pregnancy behaviour). All male and neutered or all female (may need spaying if become territorial). In my opinion it really doesn't matter what genders you go for as they all come with their own personality. Any mix may lead to having to get them neutered or spayed. But if your wanting to avoid babies I'd avoid male and female pairings or keep them separate and keep swapping them into eachothers cages (dirty not clean) until they have both been to the vets and are safe to then bond together. Please see my bonding post for information on this.

Hope this helps! 😊🐰🐇
